How to Organize a Small Laundry Room

Knowing how to organize a small laundry room can make everyday chores easier, even when floor space and storage are limited. A few simple changes can help you use the walls, keep laundry supplies accessible, and prevent clutter from building up on counters or the floor. These five ideas can also work in a larger laundry area that needs a more practical layout.

How to Organize a Small Laundry Room

1. Add storage where you can

Storage is often the first challenge in a compact laundry room. If there is little room for additional furniture, make use of the wall space above and around your appliances. Cabinets can keep supplies out of sight while providing a dedicated place for items such as detergent, cleaning products, and towels.

Two larger cabinets can offer more useful capacity than a single small cupboard. They can also hold items that are used seasonally, such as beach towels, freeing up room in other parts of the home. Before choosing cabinets, measure the available wall area and check that doors can open without interfering with appliances or walkways.

2. Install an open shelf for everyday items

An open shelf keeps frequently used supplies within easy reach and makes use of vertical space. Store everyday items, such as laundry detergent, on the shelf, and use baskets to group smaller or less attractive items. Clear containers can be convenient for detergent pods or powder, but always label them and keep laundry products in their original packaging when safe storage or product instructions require it.

A small basket can also collect unmatched socks until their pairs turn up. Keeping this collection in one place is more manageable than letting socks spread across a counter or shelf.

3. Sort dirty laundry before washing

Putting all dirty clothes into one basket means sorting them later, often when it is time to start a load. Separate laundry as it comes into the room using individual hampers or divided laundry baskets. Depending on your household’s routine, you might sort by color, fabric type, or washing instructions.

Choose containers that fit the available floor space and are easy to carry to the washer. Avoid filling them so heavily that they become difficult to move. Sorting ahead of time can make it quicker to transfer an appropriate load without emptying a mixed basket onto the floor.

4. Create a place to hang clothes

A rod or other suitable hanging space gives freshly dried clothes somewhere to go while you sort and fold the rest. It can also be useful for garments that need to air-dry. Hanging clothes promptly may help prevent wrinkles from setting in, and it keeps garments off the floor and appliances.

Place the hanging area within easy reach of the dryer, while making sure it does not block a doorway, appliance controls, or movement through the room. If space is especially tight, consider a compact option that can be folded or moved when it is not in use.

5. Give clutter-prone areas a purpose

Every room tends to have a hotspot: a counter, shelf, or corner where items collect because there is no clear place for them. Identify where clutter usually gathers in your laundry room and assign that spot a specific use. For example, a small basket on a counter can hold delicate items that need separate care.

Keep the container suited to the items it collects, and empty it regularly. A defined purpose makes it easier for everyone in the household to put things away rather than leaving them in a pile. If clutter starts collecting somewhere else, reassess whether that area needs its own storage solution.

Keep Your Laundry Room Functional

To organize a small laundry room effectively, focus on accessible storage, simple sorting, and a clear place for hanging clothes. You do not need to change everything at once: start with the area that causes the most frustration, then adjust the setup as you learn what works for your household. A few well-chosen cabinets, a shelf, baskets, and a hanging space can help make a small laundry room easier to use and keep tidy.
