Something New for Art Bar

Art Bar is beginning a new chapter. After years of sharing creative ideas and personal reflections on a public blog, its creator is moving new posts to Patreon while continuing to publish selected content and updates for the wider community. The change comes during a period of family transition and reflects a desire to protect creative work and make space for a renewed artistic practice.

A fresh sunrise plunge to begin this new chapter.

Art Bar and a season of change

The shift follows a year of uncertainty about how to describe the next stage of work and life. The creator describes feeling both unsettled and hopeful, looking back at what has been built while trying to find a direction forward. Creative work and family life have long been closely connected, and that relationship has changed as the household enters a new phase.

Motherhood and creativity can overlap in ways that are difficult to separate. For many artist-parents, caregiving, problem-solving, and emotional support are part of daily life, leaving limited uninterrupted time for studio work. Making room for creative practice often means fitting it around those responsibilities rather than setting them aside.

There has also been a change in family caregiving. For the past six months, the creator has visited her 87-year-old mother, who needs around-the-clock care. They live eight minutes apart, and the afternoon visit takes place during a roughly four-hour period when her mother has no help. The visit includes practical support, conversation, checking that food is available, and sharing photos of the grandchildren.

Not a day goes by that I am not grateful to still have my mom with me. Her joyous soul created mine.

This stage is sometimes described as being part of the “sandwich generation,” caring for children while also supporting aging parents. The experience can bring both fatigue and sadness, alongside gratitude for the people who matter. For readers in a similar situation, small, predictable routines can help make caregiving visits more manageable while preserving a sense of connection and independence.

Why new Art Bar content is moving to Patreon

For 14 years, the blog has offered more than 500 posts free to read, learn from, and use for inspiration. The archive has also supported the creation of two books and helped connect parents, teachers, and makers across different communities.

The creator remains committed to sharing creative work, but has become concerned about generative AI using material published online. This concern about the use of artists’ and writers’ work has influenced the decision to place new content behind a membership option. The move is intended to give the creator greater control over how new work is shared and to make it possible to regain momentum during a demanding period of life.

The first four posts on Patreon. The first three are free. Membership is available for $8 per month, or readers can follow for free.

What readers can expect

New posts will be shared twice each month. One post will follow the familiar Art Bar format, with process art, DIY activities, or projects for tweens and teens. These posts will also include printable guides, making it easier to collect and use the ideas offline.

The second monthly post will document the creator’s development as an artist, including journals, materials, travel, and sources of inspiration. Readers will also be invited to follow the journey toward a first art show. The long-term goal is to be a working artist by age 60, a milestone that is three years away.

The blog and newsletter will continue

This change is not a farewell to the existing community. The blog will continue to receive a post about once a month, and possibly more often. Planned updates include “best of” collections, revised older posts, and previews of new Patreon work. The Art Bar newsletter will also continue, with free ideas shared alongside the new membership content.

Readers who want regular project instructions and printable resources can consider the paid option, while those who prefer not to subscribe can follow for free and continue using the public blog and newsletter. Checking the current membership details before joining is a useful way to confirm the available posts and price.

Art Bar is moving into a different format, not ending its connection with readers. The goal is to keep sharing creative ideas while making room for a developing art practice and family responsibilities. The blog, newsletter, and new Patreon posts will each offer a way to stay connected with Art Bar.

Much love and gratitude to you all.
