Powder Room Makeover: Faux Marble Tile Floor

A powder room makeover can transform a small space, but replacing an old floor may involve more than choosing a tile. In this project, a marble-inspired porcelain floor delivered the desired look, while an unexpected discovery beneath the existing flooring made professional installation the practical choice.

Planning the powder room makeover

The original plan was to remove the vanity and toilet, take out the old travertine floor, and install new tile over a weekend. With several other house projects and trips already on the schedule, the renovation began to feel less manageable. Removing tile, preparing the subfloor, and making accurate cuts can be demanding work, particularly for a first-time tiling project.

Rather than risk extending the project or creating a costly repair, the homeowners hired a contractor. That decision proved especially useful once the existing floor was removed. A practical planning tip for any bathroom renovation is to allow time and budget for surprises below the surface, especially in an older home.

By the end of the first day, the room had a large opening where the floor had been.

What the old floor revealed

The powder room had once been part of a porch. Brick steps from the earlier structure were still beneath the bathroom. When the space was converted into a bathroom, concrete had been poured to level the floor instead of installing a level plywood underlay.

This discovery changed the scope of the work and caused a delay. It is a useful reminder that an older home can conceal several layers of construction history. Before choosing a tile or estimating installation time, check that the floor beneath it is sound, stable, and properly prepared. A qualified installer can assess uneven or unusual surfaces and recommend an appropriate solution.

The project was delayed again when some tiles arrived broken and there were not enough intact pieces to finish the installation immediately. Once replacement tile was available and the remaining work was completed, the powder room had a new floor.

Choosing a marble-look hexagon tile

The design goal was the classic appearance of hexagon marble tile without spending several thousand dollars on natural stone. The selected option was Carrara marble-look porcelain hexagon tile. Its stone-inspired pattern offered a similar visual effect at a lower cost, which mattered even more after the unexpected floor work.

A rectangular version of the tile was also considered, but the hexagon shape better suited the look planned for this small bathroom. Porcelain is a common choice for floors because it is a durable tile material, but installation still depends on careful layout and a properly prepared base. Before buying, check the product’s specifications and order enough material for the planned area, including a reasonable allowance for cuts or breakage.

Tile samples can help compare color and pattern in the room’s lighting. For a small powder room, a repeatable pattern such as hexagons can add detail without requiring a large decorative feature.

The progress photos were taken on a phone, so the tile’s fine details may not be fully visible.

Finishing the room after the flooring

At this stage, the vanity was temporarily in the living room and the toilet was in the garage while the room was being put back together. The rest of the makeover included painting the beadboard green, covering an orange wall with paint, updating the mirror frame, hanging black-and-white floral wallpaper, and changing the light fixture and bathroom hardware.

The remaining tasks also included painting the door and trim, installing a new sink faucet, giving the vanity a gray-washed finish, and decorating. Working through a checklist can make a multi-step renovation easier to manage. It also helps identify which jobs need to happen before fixtures and accessories are reinstalled.

When professional tile installation makes sense

Doing a project yourself can save on labor, but it is not always the least expensive option overall. Subfloor repairs, specialized tools, damaged materials, and installation mistakes can add time and cost. If the floor is uneven, the demolition reveals unexpected construction, or the work involves unfamiliar tools, getting a professional assessment can help prevent avoidable problems.

This powder room makeover ultimately paired a marble-inspired hexagon floor with a broader set of cosmetic updates. The main takeaway is to plan for the visible design choices and the hidden conditions underneath them. With a realistic schedule, enough tile, and a stable floor, a porcelain tile upgrade can bring a refined look to a small bathroom.
