DIY Repurposed Canvas Art

Repurposed canvas art is a simple way to give an old framed canvas a fresh look without starting from scratch. With a poster, spray adhesive, and a few basic supplies, you can cover an image that no longer suits your space and create a new decorative piece. This project also works well when you want an inexpensive update for a covered porch or another sheltered area.

How to Make Repurposed Canvas Art

An existing tropical-print canvas was reused for this makeover. Rather than discard a frame that was still useful, a large print was attached over the original artwork. The same approach can work with other posters or prints, as long as the dimensions suit the canvas and the paper can be attached smoothly.

The canvas had once fit the room’s style, but it no longer felt right for the space. Reusing it offered a practical alternative to buying a new framed piece, and it provided art for an unfinished spot on the back porch.

The artwork was part of a quick refresh of a plain porch area. An unused box that had previously held a mini fridge, with a television once mounted above it, was given a more finished appearance. The small project was planned as an inexpensive update that could be completed in about an hour, with the full makeover costing $37.

Supplies

  • An old framed canvas
  • A poster or large print
  • Spray adhesive
  • White paint
  • A craft brush
  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Paint the canvas edges if needed. Check whether the original image is visible along the sides. If it is, apply white paint to the outer edges with a craft brush and let it dry before attaching the poster. This helps prevent the old image from showing around the new print.
  2. Position and measure the poster. Lay the poster over the canvas and check how its image will line up. Trim excess paper with scissors if necessary. Take time to center the design before applying adhesive, since repositioning may be difficult once the paper makes contact.
  1. Attach one end. Apply spray adhesive to one edge of the canvas, following the product label. Align the poster carefully and press the paper onto the adhesive.
  1. Work gradually across the canvas. Roll the poster out a little at a time, applying adhesive as you go and smoothing the paper toward the opposite edge. Working in small sections helps keep the print aligned and reduces the chance of wrinkles or trapped air.

Once the poster is attached, the canvas has a completely different look. Check the edges and surface for loose areas, then let the adhesive set for the amount of time specified on its packaging.

Finishing the Porch Display

The porch refresh paired the updated canvas with a few changes to the surrounding area. A stained piece of wood supported by corbels was used as a mantel-style shelf, while the inside of the old box was painted black using leftover paint. Together, these details made the previously unfinished spot feel more intentional.

The complete facelift cost $37. The plan is to turn the space into a real outdoor fireplace in the future, but the low-cost decorative update provided a temporary solution in the meantime. The repurposed canvas helped finish the display without requiring a new framed artwork purchase.

Practical Tips for a Neat Result

  • Protect your work area. Spray adhesive can travel beyond the canvas, so cover nearby surfaces and use it in a well-ventilated area. Follow all safety and application instructions on the product label.
  • Check the fit first. Measure the canvas and compare it with the poster before trimming. A test layout makes it easier to choose the best position for the image.
  • Consider where the art will hang. A standard paper poster may not be designed for moisture or direct weather exposure. For a porch display, keep the finished piece sheltered unless the materials are specifically rated for outdoor use.
  • Apply adhesive in manageable sections. Moving steadily across the canvas gives you more control over alignment and helps the paper lie flat.

Repurposed canvas art is an easy, budget-conscious option when an old canvas is still in good condition but its image no longer works for your decor. Choose a poster that fits the frame, prepare the edges, and attach the print carefully for a refreshed piece suited to your space.
